Mullaghmore

Mullaghmore a signature point on the Wild Atlantic Way & one of the world’s best big wave surfing spots…

Mullaghmore, Ireland’s premier big wave surfing spot is a small fishing village and popular tourist destination located just 20 minutes from Ocean Heights B&B. Lying close to the borders of Counties Leitrim and Donegal, Mullaghmore has stunning views of Benbulben Mountain and Donegal and Sligo Bay.

Mullaghmore Head has been named a discovery point on the second section of the Wild Atlantic Way route which runs from Mullaghmore Head to Keem Strand. On a walk around the head you can enjoy the spectacular waves and take a photograph of the iconic Classie Bawn Castle, home of the late Lord Mountbatten who was killed here by the IRA in 1979.

Huge Atlantic rollers crash onto surfing strands all the way up Ireland’s wild western seaboard. But it’s off the coast of Sligo that they’ve discovered ‘Prowlers’ – a wave like no other with swells said to be up to 100ft. That’s why Sligo’s Mullaghmore Head hosted Ireland’s first Big Wave contest in 2011, drawing surfers from across the globe. Tow-in surfing – involving jetskis as well as surfers – is a highly skilled sport and exciting to watch from the headland. – Tourism Ireland

With a 3km green flag family beach and rugged coastline with clear waters, rocky outcrops and coves Mullaghmore is the perfect spot for water sports like scuba diving. Mullaghmore Pier is also a renowned base for fishing.
