Inishmurray Island is located just 7 kilometers off the coast of County Sligo. It is one mile long by a half mile wide. Although isolated, this small 225 acre island was continuously inhabited from the sixth century when Saint Molaise founded his monastery there. In 1880, Inishmurray was home to 102 people but the population fell to 46 buy the time of its evacuation in 1948.
 
Today, Inishmurray Island contains the most complete remains of an early Irish monastic settlement including a monastic beehive hut and the ruins of nineteenth century houses. It is home to many plants and wildlife including seals, sea birds and wild flowers.
 
The island is one of Sligo’s most hidden gems and can only be accessed by boat in favorable weather. The following tour operators offer boat trips to Inishmurray, it is advisable to book before hand and go equipped with good walking shoes and a picnic:
