Lissadell House & Gardens
Visit Lissadell Estate, one of the brightest historical and cultural gems on the Wild Atlantic Way…
Lissadell House is a neo-classical Greek revivalist style country house that was built between 1830 and 1835.
Located only 5 minutes from Ocean Heights B&B, Lissadell Estate was the childhood home of Irish revolutionary, Constance Gore-Booth, her sister the poet and suffragist, Eva Gore-Booth, and their siblings, Mabel Gore-Booth, Mordaunt Gore-Booth and Josslyn Gore-Booth.
Lissadell was also the sometime holiday retreat of the world-renowned poet, William Butler Yeats. In his famous poem “In Memory of Eva Gore-Booth and Con Markiewicz” Yeats laments their loss:
"The light of evening, Lissadell,
Great windows open to the south,
Two girls in silk kimonos, both
Beautiful, one a gazelle."
Current owners Edward Walsh, his wife Constance Cassidy and their seven children have lovingly transformed the house, gardens, stable block and grounds over the last 10 years.
OUR VISION is to transform the estate into a flagship for tourism in Sligo and the North West, whilst providing a secure environment for our children and for our visitors. We do not wish to exploit Lissadell commercially but to restore the house and gardens to their former glory, make Lissadell self-sustaining and protect this crucible of Ireland’s historic and literary heritage.
~ Edward Walsh, Constance Cassidy & Family
The House itself has a large collection of paintings and literature by George ‘AE’ Russell, Jack Yeats, WB Yeats, Eva Gore Booth, and contemporary Artists and authors. The renovated Tea Rooms serve wholesome country fare including quiches, scones and salads using fruit and vegetables from the Gardens, and oysters from Lissadell’s own oyster beds.
Lissadell House & Gardens is open to visitors for the 2015 summer season from May 2nd – October 18th. Please visit Lissadell House & Gardens for more information.
